***Consult your physician before starting any fitness program. Certain exercises may not be safe for everyone.***
Your fitness program should have stretching components and strength training components. Since we believe the rotator cuff is extremely important, we encourage you to pay special attention to protecting your shoulders.
THE TARGET GOLFER
Our golfer demonstrates the following characteristics:
- Plays 8 or more rounds per month
- Sets serious golfing goals
- Plays for competition's and performance's sake
- Already skilled, and has a concept of a healthy swing style
THE GOALS: Golf fitness goals:
1. Increased Flexibility: This will allow for reduced risk of injury and a greater Range of Motion (ROM). The more ROM, the better the body can create the swing motion
2. Speed: A faster swing speed allows for more distance and more thorough coverage through one's golf bag.
3. A Wider Arc: This will relate to speed by increasing one's arc.
4. Endurance: Our player desires to finish just as strong or stronger than the first nine or round of a tournament.
5. Power: Ahh, who doesn't crave the extra juice to go for the par 5's in two?
THE SEASONS
While many golfers play year round, we divided the year into three seasons. The reason we did this was so we could train for a peak performance period. The segments are as follows:
- Pre-Season March - April
- In-Season May - November
- Off-Season December - February
During each season focus of the strengthening program will change. The goal of the off-season is to 1) rest and recuperate, 2) maintain flexibility and 3) make solid strength gains. During the pre-season the golfer should shift to more golf specific exercises and ease back on the strength training. Finally, the in-season program should be designed to maintain current strength levels and be largely composed of golf specific exercises.
Now that the player, seasons, and goals have been detailed, we'll move on to the warm-up routine. *It is important to note that all the exercises will have
